I suppose this can be one of those "fate" discussions. For instance, do you believe that one act can affect the rest of your life? All of the little things that you do each day affect tomorrow, which afftects the day after that, and so forth. Sometimes I think back on my life and wonder what would've happened if I had gone this school, or played that sport? What if I had decided to really tackle playing an instrument? Where would I be today? Would I be doing this exact thing at this point in time? Who are the people that would be in my life? I guess life is more mysterious that way. I don't think we can figure these things out. Who knows, maybe my life would totally be different a month from now if I had stopped to buy some candy at the store today instead of just heading to the office. I think if I look back, I can trace the path that brought me to where I am today: laid-off dot com-er interning at an online magazine / assistant volleyball coach. This makes me think about those "choose your own adventure" books. I think my brothers had some and so I read one or two of them. What the book did was bring you up to a point where you had to choose path A or B. Then you'd flip to a certain page and keep repeating that process. In the end, you've saved the world or were eaten by aliens. Anyways, I used to cheat. If I was eaten by monsters, I'd flip back a step and take the other option. Hehheh. Yeah, I was a cheater, but I wanted to save the world! Too bad in life we can't undo mistakes nearly so easily. Too bad we can't just turn back the clock at set things "right" so that we could avoid the pain and sadness. Then again, all of those experiences shape us, and we wouldn't appreciate our life nearly as much without the cuts and scratches from our hike through the forest of the unknown. Right when I got there, a few of the girls were sitting around and when I walk up to them, one of them said to me, "We got a bid!!" A bid as in an invitation to play in nationals (Junior Olympics). YIPPIE!! It was really excited to hear the news about it, but since it was coming from them, I had to confirm it by asking a couple of questions. I didn't want them to jump to any false conclusions... About 5 minutes later, the coach comes in and asks me if I knew we received a bid. So it turns out that it was all true. Hooray! Utah, here we come baby!! After practice, we celebrated by eating some Krispy Kreme donuts, as one of the players' parents had brought in 3 dozen of them. I hope that this keeps the girls focused for the rest of the season. They're finally starting to play the way we want them to. SG, signing off. # ( 12:59 PM ) Scarf Girl Woah, my heart skipped a beat this morning when I was browsing some articles from the newswire. I saw Plane crashes in China with 112 on board. Then I read the article and saw that it was flying from Beijing to Dalian. I was like... Beijing... hmm... You see, my parents are vacationing in China right now. Originally, their plan was to go to Shanghai, chill there for a few weeks while travelling around to neighboring cities. Then about 5 days before their trip was over, they'd head over to Beijing for a couple of days and then fly home. Then they decided to change their itinerary and fly to Beijing first, then go to Shanghai later. So the timing would be right, if I sorta mentally combined both itineraries... it's about a week before they come back from China... they'd be on a plane having something to do with Beijing... Well this would've taken place yesterday morning, so I think we would've heard something by now. Anyways, just had a scare...'tis all. Scarf Girl, making a sigh of relief. # ( 10:18 AM ) Scarf Girl You know what feels really great? It's when you teach somebody something, and then they start to get it. So on Sunday, I was teaching one of the girls to adopt a different technique for hitting (spiking). We were having a break, and she was kinda sitting around so I thought it would be a great chance to work on her swing. I had been working on her before, but I thought I'd take it to the next level. So after about 10 to 15 minutes, and several analogies later, it was almost time to start a new match. Nothing happened much with her hitting, but her serving was pretty awesome. Since we had been working on things, she took all of my advice/instruction to heart and started serving tougher. I think she even got an ace or two. Yay! Then there was practice yesterday where we focused mostly on hitting. They were hitting for probably half of the practice. Yeah... they missed way too many hits. I suppose that's because we had focused so much on defense that we kinda neglected the offense. Heh. But isn't that saying supposed to hold true? The best offense is a good defense. Anyways, so when she'd go up to hit a couple, she'd smack them down better than I had seen her do the entire season. She still has to get used to it, but I'm so happy that my advice is working. *grin* Scarf Girl, signing off. # Monday, May 06, 2002 ( 5:25 PM ) Scarf Girl Whew, I'm pretty tired right now. I just spent my afternoon trying to detail my car the way I did with my brother's car. The thing is, it's just me this time and it's taking me forever! Given that my car is pretty small, and it's not in terrible condition, it has parts that are more difficult to clean. So far, I washed, dried, and clay barred my car. *whew*. I also finally took my snowboard rack down. Guess I'll have to wash that too since a whole lot of flies went splat on it. Eeew.. gross.. Anyways, I too bad I have to leave for practice soon. I guess I can wax-on / wax-off later since it's parked in the garage. Scarf Girl, signing off. # Sunday, May 05, 2002 ( 11:13 PM ) Scarf Girl I don't know if it was just me, but I knew a fair amount of people who wanted to backpack in Europe right after graduating from college. I don't know what it is about travelling that seems to appeal to fresh college grads. Perhaps it's seeing parts of the world that they had only read about in books. Perhaps it is merely getting away from all that is familiar to us, and has been familiar to us for all these years. Well, turns out that as graduating was approaching, I had no real desire to go take an adventure. I simply wanted to find a job and start paying off my school loan. Not that I didn't want to see the world, but it turns out that my junior year was spent studying abroad (aka. travelling for 9 months continuously). I suppose I had gotten it out of my system, so to speak. I think lately, I've wanted to capture that adventure again. I think I want to start travelling if I get the chance. I suppose I'll still be busy until this coaching thing is over, but after that, I would love to have a new experience. I don't know when, where, or what, but I know I want to do something really great. So on Friday, I ate at Panda Express. Ah... gotta love that really "authentic" Chinese food. And of course when you eat "real" Chinese food, you HAVE you have a FORTUNE COOKIE. Personally, I love to eat fortune cookies. They're plain, but yummy. Heh, especially warm and straight out of the factory. Side note: When I was in elementary school, my class took a field trip to Chinatown and we visited the fortune cookie factory where we got to see the machine that pumps out the little baked circles which are eventually hand folded with fortunes inserted into them. It's pretty neato. As I was saying, I ate at Panda. So I got this fortune which I totally laughed at when I read it because it was saying something really cool. You will step on the soil of many countries. Guess we'll see, eh? Scarf Girl, signing off. # |
