5 Out of 10 Ain't Bad

Whew. I hiked something around 5 miles today. The reason I'm not exactly sure is we kinda got lost. Yeah, lost in the forest. Sounds like the bad plot for a horror movie. I hiked with 5 friends today somewhere around Woodside at Pescadero Creek Park. We took the Old Haul Road, Pomponio, Jones Gulch, and Brook Trail Loop. (Somewhere between the Jones Gulch & Brook Trail, we got lost...very lost)

We set off around Noon, and after maybe 30 minutes, we arrived at a stream where we had to cross. Since nobody wanted to take off their shoes, we somehow managed to walk on logs & rocks and kept our shoes and socks mostly dry. After a few minutes of hiking, we hit a fork in the road. "Which way should we go?" Heh, that seemed to be the question of the day. There was a fork in the road and no road marker. We decided to take the left fork and that's when the "adventure" began.

For the next hour and a half or so, we hiked and hiked, never knowing which way to go, never spotting any trail markers. A bad sign. Eventually, we hit a road. A road as in, for cars to drive on. "Um.. I don't think this is the right way." So, we decided to back track a bit and take a different path.

That path led us to a camp ground of sorts. The 10-year-olds summer camp kind. We spotted a path that led off of the camp and figured it might lead us some place interesting. After hiking a bit more, we hit Granger's Bridge and saw signs for Jones Gulch. Woohoo! We finally could figure out where we were on the map.

We hit another intersection where we could've hiked the Brook Trail Loop or head back. Since the loop looked like it would be about 5 miles and we had only 3 hours to spare, we decided not to do the hike and headed back. We set off for a 10-mile hike today, but ended up doing only 5. Heh, I guess we wasted a lot of time when we were lost.

Scarf Girl, all hiked out.

So here's an old set of Friday Five questions. It's from April 5, 2002:

1. What are the first things that you do in the morning to start your day? Get out of bed, use the toilet, wash my face and brush my teeth.
2. What are the last things that you do at night before going to bed? Wash my face, brush my teeth, use the toilet, crawl into bed.
3. What daily routine have you recently added to your day? Cleaning up the hair that I seem to shed for no apparent reason.
4. What routine do you wish you could get rid of? See answer from question 3.
5. What's the one thing that makes you feel like something is missing if you don't do it some point within your day? Chatting on the phone with M.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Wow, can you believe it's actually kinda cold in the city right now? Heh, I bet everybody living in the South Bay is roasting. Mmm... I'm waiting for my brownies to be done baking so that I can have a yummy afternoon snack.

I happen to be browsing the Cal Alumni page and one of the features was this article: UC Berkeley's 2002 Summer Reading List focuses on banned books. I believe these are books that incoming freshman should read. Here is the list:

1. "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding
New York: Penguin Books, 1954, (c)1982

2. "Song of Solomon" by Toni Morrison
New York: Dutton/Plume, 1987, (c)1977

3. "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger
Boston: Little, Brown, 1991, (c)1951

4. "Beloved" by Toni Morrison
New York: Dutton/Plume, 1988

5. "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain
New York: Viking/Penguin, 1986

6. "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende
New York: Bantam Books, 1986

7. "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker
New York: Pocket Books, 1990

8. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee
New York, NY : HarperCollins Publishers, 1999

9. "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley
New York: Harper, 1998, (c)1932

10. "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood
New York: Bantam, 1998

11. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain
New York: Bantam Books, 1986

12. "SlaughterHouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut
New York: Dell, 1991, (c) 1969.

Hmm.. I had only read 4 of those books before I entered college. Heh, even now, that number has not changed. I suppose I should get crackin. *Beeeeep* Oh yay, the brownies are done!

The other day, I was bowling with M, D, and G. We talked about the subject of men, women, and friendships. I don't know if there were any particular conclusions, but there was a general consensus among them that people become friends with each other because of some initial attraction (physical, mental, yadi yada). You don't just become friends with someone for no reason right? Well, maybe some people do.

Then there was talk about how guys and girls approach friendships. I thought that most people become friends simply because of a common interest or hobby of sorts. There are no ulterior motives of any sort. A friend is a friend. I thought this to be true for both guys and girls. That's just the way I think. I don't usually go around thinking that people are "up to something."

The thing is, the guys all agreed that they become friends with a girl because they're interested in them. I suppose they are trying to let the girl get to know him better and eventually trust him. Also, it is a "safe" way to approach a girl, since girls just like to make friends. Ultimately though, they all agreed that guys aren't "nice" and that they are always up to something. Heheh. Cool friends I have, don't you think?

Six. I remember flipping around on the tv one time and on PBS, it was showing Sesame Street (I think) and some of the characters were singing about the number six. "My favorite number, is six!" Random thought.

I was going through the security checkpoint this morning...

Security Lady (SL): Is this your bag?
Me: Yes.
SL: Are you a minor?
Me: No.
SL: Okay. Please come with me. [motions for me to put my stuff on the table]
SL: [while she's checking dabbing my bag and sandals with a cloth..] So how old ARE you?
Me: 25.
SL: What?? You're THAT old? You look like a minor.
Me: heh heh.

Oh look, I'm alive after all, and with a Delta Airlines travel voucher that could take me to some far-away exotic places like... the East Coast.

So my girls did a great job playing over the weekend. They came in 33rd out of 64 teams in the 14's Club division. Not bad. Heh, we won our pool and received a small wooden plaque of sorts.

As for Utah itself, it is way way hot. I was reading the newspaper this mornal and in the forecast, it said something like "Record Breaking Temperature." Thank goodness I'm back. Surprisingly, I handled the high 90s/low 100s weather.
